DANCER IN THE DARK is a psychological drama that leaves its audience feeling psychotic. It is unforgettably haunting. I was excited to view this film, but after viewing it I was flooded with a sense of total hopelessness. The injustice illustrated in the film is simply overwhelming, but the 'raw' performance given by BJORK (lead actress) seasons this injustice with realism. The film is filmed in a handi-cam style, which of course makes the film seemingly real and far more haunting. This is a film that you watch once, once and only once.

Another aspect that enhances the terror of this film is the score. Surprisingly enough, this film is a musical. A musical which utilises songs with soft and ballad-like melodies. For example, 'My Favourite Things'... yes, that's 'The Sound Of Music' ruined for me. The songs compose the beautiful world in the mind of BJORK's character. The vocals and the choreography are fantastic, and the tone is joyous. This joyous tone polarly contrasts with the world in which the character lives in, and emphasises that the character's reality is basically a nightmare.

I'm quite disappointed that this film only received one oscar nomination (for one of its marvellous songs). This film is the perfect embodiment of a psychological drama. It induces the audience to experience anger and frustration. It provokes our minds to constantly exercise. Most importantly, it reminds us of the injustice that exists in our imperfect world, and that we should NOT take our beautiful lives for granted.

BJORK should have at least been NOMINATED (for an oscar) for her portrayal of a woman coping with the most dire and desperate circumstances of life. A mother, who's love for her son is unlimited and undefined. This performance is utterly convincing, and is delivered with total commitment and conviction. Although I vow to never to view this film again, it is the PERFECT psychological drama. Everyone should see it ONCE.

P.S. The final scene is extremely HEAVY and powerful... word of advice: WATCH IT WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE!

Here's the scene which ruined 'My Favourite Things' for ME. For the scene to truly haunt you, you must watch the film to get the context of this scene.
