GREEN SNAKE (Chinese Title: Ching Se) is a film that explores the notions of love, lust and 'human' compassion. You would think it'd be one of those OVER-THE-TOP sentimental period pieces, but for the most part-it's a light hearted, sensual film with a serious UNDERTONE.

The set is surreal and the acting is quite lovely; the two lead actresses possess authentically sinuous-snaky qualities. The intimate scenes are andrenaline-rushing, but NOT TOO 'rushed'. The visual effects... are decent for 1993, BUT thankfully the film is not caught up in the 'magic' element. The true magic is in the calming atmosphere weaved by the idyllic settings and soft ballads.
I truly enjoyed it. UNTIL THE ENDING. The film's message was subtly sent ALREADY, the melodramatic ending wrecks the character of the film and the light atmosphere established.
ALL in ALL. Wonderful movie WITHOUT the ending. It was like eating a beautiful meringue cake only to reach a rock hard centre, and the centre is NO diamond ring!
